Introduction

Dr John Hedberg holds the Millennium Innovations Chair of ICT and Education in the School of Education. He has taught postgraduate courses on cognitive strategies, interface design for learning, and implementation and evaluation of technology-based learning. He has also taught strategic planning for technology implementation in schools and has also written on policy aspects of new technologies in education.

He has designed training needs assessments, evaluation systems and conducted workshops on the instructional design and evaluation of e-learning environments. He has been keynote speaker at numerous conferences on the educational technologies in Canada, United States, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Europe, and many states in Australia.

Research Interests

Dr Hedberg recently completed several research projects about the use of ICTs in learning. These have included: The use of mobile phones as social software tools in orienteering tasks in geography, using communities of practice as a staff development strategy, using cognitive tools to develop mathematics problem solving repertoire; internet literacy and the production of multi-modal artefacts in History and Science. In 2007, he completed an evaluation for the Learning Federation about the use of Interactive Whiteboards with their learning objects.

He is also working with Professor Peter Freebody and a team from University of Sydney, University of Queensland and Dr Wilhelmina van Rooy, and Dr Penny van Bergen from Macquarie on an ARC project exploring the role of digital representations in the new life sciences.

With the Macquarie ICT Innovations Centre and his graduate students he is exploring digital representation and early mathematics learning with robots, in particular he is interested in 2D and 3D representations and how younger learners generate mental models of the differences.

Community Outreach

Professor Hedberg currently serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of the Journal of Interactive Learning Research, ALT-J, Distance Education and the program committee for Asia-Pacific e-Learning Conference. From 2000-2006, he was the Editor-in-Chief of Educational Media International, a refereed journal for those interested in the application of media and technology in learning contexts throughout the world and he served as the President of the International Council for Educational Media, a UNESCO affiliate between 2006 and 2008.
